Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu well pressed and drained
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 tbsp chili paste sriracha or sambal for smoky heat
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp sesame oil for nuttiness
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup for vegan option
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice brightens the marinade

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Silicone brush
  • Press or weight
  • Small mixing bowl

Method

  1. Start by draining your tofu and placing it between two plates with a weight on top to press out excess moisture for at least 20 minutes; this helps it become extra crispy.
  2. Once pressed, cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes, creating uniform pieces that will crisp evenly in the oven.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, chili paste, minced garlic, sesame oil, honey, and lemon juice to make a flavorful marinade.
  4. Place the tofu cubes in a large bowl or shallow dish and pour the marinade over, tossing gently to coat all sides evenly. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for deeper flavor.
  5. Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  6. Arrange the marinated tofu cubes on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer, giving each piece enough space for air to circulate and crisp up.
  7. Use a silicone brush to lightly coat the tofu with any remaining marinade for extra flavor and shine.
  8. Roast the tofu in the oven for 12 minutes, then flip each piece carefully and brush with more marinade if desired.
  9. Continue roasting for another 12-15 minutes, until the edges are deep amber and crispy, and the aroma of spices fills your kitchen.
  10. Remove the tofu from the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes—this helps the texture settle and enhances the flavor.
  11. Serve the spicy roasted tofu hot, garnished with fresh herbs or a squeeze of lime for an extra zing.
